    Audio Cracking - UMC404HD - 2012 iMac - Ableton Live - Yeti Pro Blue Mic

    Hello Peeps,

    I could use some help as I am beyond frustrated at this point (been messing with this for MANY hours).

    I have a 2012 iMac with 4 USB 3.0 ports. I'm using Ableton Live 9. I have a Yeti Pro Blue mic that can record via USB or analog (using XLR cables).

    I can record great audio in Live by plugging the Yeti into my computer directly via USB.

    For a variety of reasons (I was told you can get better audio with an audio interface while using the Yeti as an analog mic ... plus, I recently bought a bass guitar which I want to be able to record into Ableton ... plus, I want to get into podcasting, utilizing 3 mics for the 3 hosts at the same time) I decided to purchase an audio interface.

    I purchased the Behringer U-Phoria UMC404HD audio interface in a bundle that included three XLR cables. I purchased this interface because of the great price, the included cables, and because the information SPECIFICALLY said it would work on Macs.

    I've spent basically all day trying to get a quality voice audio recording using this setup. I officially give up. lol. I keep getting bad audio cracking/background distortion noise. I've tried everything I can think of to fix the issue and cannot. I've messed around with the gain levels (on the mic, the interface, and the audio input settings on the computer). I've switched the interface USB between all four USB ports on my Mac. I've tried all three XLR cables that came in the bundle with the interface. I've played around with the buffering and sample size options in Live.
    NOTHING WORKS. Keep in mind, the audio is great if I switch to USB recording.

    After much searching online, I'm thinking it may have something to do with this interface not being compatible with Macs and/or USB 3.0 ports. Apparently there are drivers you can install for Windows, but nothing for Mac users. This is especially frustrating since the product description specifically states it will work on Macs.

    What else can I do? PLEASE HELP!

    Hi Kyle, welcome to the forum!

    A few points:

    1) I wasn't aware we BEHRINGER offers a UMC404HD package that comes with XLR cables included. Where did you purchase the package?

    2) Our audio interface products (like the UMC404HD) are fully compatible with Apple's Core Audio system, so no drivers are needed to get it work properly on your iMac. I know older versions of MacOS had improvements to this with OS system updates, which OS are you currently running?

    3) Cracks and Pops in audio can be an indicating factor that your buffer size might not be set correctly in your DAW. Here's a great article I've shared before that might provide more insight. Since you mention having an older iMac, processing power on your computer might also be playing a factor.

    4) Double check to make sure your UMC404HD's sampling rate matches the same setting you have setup in Ableton. (As in are both set to the same sampling rate?)

    1 – I purchased on Amazon. It’s called the “Behringer U-PHORIA (UMC404HD) Audiophile 2x4, 24bit/192kHz USB Audio/MIDI Interface w/Pro DJ Bundle”. Here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/Behringer-U-P...umc404hd&psc=1

    2 – OS is up to date. Currently running macOS High Sierra, version 10.13.6.

    3 – I spent several hours reading articles/watching video and I tested every possible buffer size. Plus, like I said, when I switch my mic to USB it sounds fine (great even) … on all the various buffer sizes.

    I don’t think it’s a computer performance issue. It was a top of the line model at the time.

    Processor = 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory = 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

    4 – Yes, sampling rate matches.

    Given the details you've stated I would expect everything should be working fine on your end, but definitely contact our CARE customer support team and see if they can assist you with step by step troubleshooting.

    If they aren't able to determine a specific cause for the behavior you're experiencing then they will probably suggest you contact the seller and have it get swapped out for a brand new unit.
